I teach choir/guitar/orchestra 1 at a very large middle school. My students are creative and happy, very frequently bursting into song for no reason at all. I often hear them coming before they set foot in my classroom, and I will know what they are wanting to work on that day because they will already be singing it. Even when I think the music is going to be difficult, they always buy in, making my job such a joy.
In addition to being creative, they are supremely kind to one another.
I will enter the lunch room and see an entire choir seated at the same table or at tables very near each other, talking and sharing all about their days. When someone is hurt, sad, bullied, etc., they have each others back. No one messes with their choir friends!
My Project
Learning to play the ukulele is a great way for students to begin the process of creating music from scratch. By having enough instruments for the class, every student will have the opportunity to play and create beautiful sounds. We will study how to finger chords as we learn about the music of Polynesia. As we learn fingerpicking skills we will study great players from all walks of like.
My students can learn about music and culture as they learn to play the ukulele.
It's a way to include students from a forgotten population and learn more about them and their background.
