My Students

Rattle! Ring! Click! Thump! Boom! These are amazing sounds found in our music class every day! However, we need a few higher and lower pitches in our Orff instrumentarium. Singing, chanting and accompanying rhymes on new instruments will empower students through art by connecting reading and music!

500 talented and happy children attend Vineville Academy of the Arts!

Although our district and school is Title I with 100% free lunch, these students come to school with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. Why? Music and artwork surround them as they walk through the doors! They know they have a unique opportunity at our school to experience general music, orchestra, art and dance each week, as well as the privilege of choosing clubs within their interests every Friday, including chorus, drama, strings, art crew, tap and ballet. Our students thrive on performances, and their arts endeavors are supported and encouraged by the classroom teachers, the administrators, the parents and the Fine Arts Team. Students SHINE at the VINE!

My Project

To encourage higher reading scores at our school, I will be using two books from master Orff educators with whom I have studied, Randy DeLelles and Jeff Kriske. "Tyme for a Rhyme" and "2nd Rhyme Around" both contain nursery rhymes with music for children. By putting rhymes to melodies and accompaniments with Orff instruments (new glockenspiels and bass resonator bars in addition to xylophones we already have), students will build vocabulary and fluency skills in reading. Students will also learn concepts in music, including form, pitch, timbre, rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics and ensemble while making choices of how to put pieces together to perform. For example, using the piece "Pease Porridge Hot," students will learn the rhyme, its history and meaning; vocabulary in the poem; the accompaniment on xylophones, drums and glockenspiels; how to play a minor pentatonic scale; AND decide how they wish to put the entire piece together! Kids have to THINK and DO in this music room!

The donation of five instruments will help round out a small instrumentarium currently in the music room.

Having more instruments gives students more opportunities and experience at playing instruments while they sing and chant their rhymes. Playing instruments helps motivate the children and engage them in the activity, which encourages them to read and focus on the lyrics. Using the lyrics as a starting point for accompaniments solidifies skills in music. It is a cycle!
