Music Technology: The Looping Station!

Help me give my students a looping station so that we can record, layer and combine different music parts into one beautiful instrumental performance.

My Students

I must have the best job in the world because every week I get to show 550 amazing kindergarten through fourth graders the joy found in making music. These kids aren't afraid of trying new things or taking risks; they come to my classroom every week ready to sing, say, play, move to, and create all kinds of beautiful music. They are smart, thoughtful, creative, energetic, and talented, and they are developing a love for music that I hope will follow them the rest of their lives. In short, my students rock!

My Project

How cool would it be for kids to contribute individual musical ideas into a collective music composition using the same technology as professional musicians?! With the BOSS RC-1 looping station, wired through a microphone and into an amplifier, the possibilities are endless! Imagine a classroom of students split into groups or working individually, each with their own percussion instrument. The teacher starts the loop with the press of a pedal and provides the song's foundation on the piano, the xylophone or the guitar. Then, child by child or group by group, additional musical layers are created and added on top of that repeating foundation, growing a song in complexity with each new part. By the time all the layers have been added a mountain of sound works together in harmony to produce something truly unique and beautiful.

Music is so often a team activity, and by empowering my students to work together and compose their own music, they can see the value in each others contributions.

Logistically however, this can be difficult to achieve, especially with our younger students who are still learning how to stay together and on the beat. The BOSS RC-1 looping station would help us solve some of those logistic problems so that every student could participate no matter where they are developmentally.
