My Students

I am privileged to teach students that love music so much they donate a ton of their time to be in the school band. We play in the school concerts, school spirit functions and in parades in our community. The band class is like a little family even though they are from all different backgrounds and speak different languages. There are a few students in the band who go above and beyond what I ask, and have started to teach themselves some jazz. The other students heard it and were immediately interested, so this semester we would like to start our own little jazz band.

My Project

These materials will give us a great starting point to introduce jazz to a group of mixed level instrumentalists. Jazz has great roots in history and this will help get that cross-curricular information into music class. This will be especially helpful and interesting for the kids who came to this country and do not know much about American culture or where certain aspects of popular music came from.

Studying jazz will help their musicianship greatly by introducing elements of swing and improving overall reading, rhythm and understanding of musical notation.

They are excited to try something new as their marching season is coming to a close, and I think this is a great way to expose them to a new kind of musical genre with which most of them are not familiar.
