My Students

"Ago?" "Ame!" ("Are you ready to learn?" "Yes, we are ready to learn!") My music students are familiar with this call and response which, borrowed from the folkloric traditions of West Africa loosely translates to "Listen!" and "I am listening." The students at my school are comfortable with multiple languages. Mandarin, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Arabic, and Uzbeck make up the first languages of most of my students. Some are still learning English, but that doesn't stop them from having fun in the new music room.

It is no doubt that their capacity to understand two or more languages attract them to music.

A community of immigrants, the students have a wonderful opportunity to bring a bit of their musical culture to our school, sharing their unique experiences and learning to appreciate others' contributions. Our school is large, around thirteen hundred students, with seventy percent of them qualifying for free lunch. Recently, our music department received the best gift music students could ever get - a music room. No longer do the music teachers have to push into the crowded classrooms bringing only as much as we can carry. Now students have a large space dedicated entirely to music.

My Project

We've been lucky to have a new band room for 2 years now. After testing out and trying different things, it is ready for a bit of a makeover! One new addition to our room this year was a set of iPads.

We have 12 iPads that are equipped with lots of fun music games and production apps like Soundtrap and Flat.

Our class sizes are around 30-35 kids. While the kids don't mind sharing and we DO have enough headphones, what we don't have are enough splitters. With the splitters requested in this project, we can have up to 5 students working together on an iPad! We can also use the extra 2 person splitters as backups for our pianos that we share for our Music and the Brain curriculum.

I've also requested a stylus to use with the band's iPad Pro. The students did a collaborative project this year with the art students and found it necessary to annotate directly onto photos. We plan to repeat this collaboration next year and I think the stylus will help the students be more precise with the annotation.
