My Students

"Ago?" "Ame!" ("Are you ready to learn?" "Yes, we are ready to learn!") My music students are familiar with this call and response which, borrowed from the folkloric traditions of West Africa loosely translates to "Listen!" and "I am listening." The students at my school are comfortable with multiple languages. Mandarin, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Arabic, and Uzbeck make up the first languages of most of my students. Some are still learning English, but that doesn't stop them from having fun in the new music room.

It is no doubt that their capacity to understand two or more languages attract them to music.

A community of immigrants, the students have a wonderful opportunity to bring a bit of their musical culture to our school, sharing their unique experiences and learning to appreciate others' contributions. Our school is large, around thirteen hundred students, with seventy percent of them qualifying for free lunch. Recently, our music department received the best gift music students could ever get - a music room. No longer do the music teachers have to push into the crowded classrooms bringing only as much as we can carry. Now students have a large space dedicated entirely to music.

My Project

We've been lucky to have a new band room for 2 years now. After testing out and trying different things, it is ready for a bit of a makeover. One thing that will help improve our room is a new printer and ink! This year, the band room printer finally gave out! Because of the amount of music and worksheets that my students use, we have always had our own printer, scanner, and copier. We must have used it too much because it finally quit working and boy could we feel the impact.

I compose, arrange and create the majority of the music the students read; this year the students became composers, too!

Whether it be a new scale sheet or a copy of the tune we are currently working on, having the ability to quickly print or copy another student's sheet of music saves so much time. And now that the students are writing their own music, they want to see that sheet music with their name listed as the composer!

We also have band librarians whose job it is to handle the distribution of sheet music. With this new printer, I'll be able to train these librarians to properly print, copy and file the music for the rest of the students giving them exposure to a real-world job.
