My Students

My students love music!! They learn so much from it! Music used with children with Autism improve social behaviors, increase focus and attention, increase communication attempts (vocalizations, verbalization's, gestures, and vocabulary), reduce anxiety, and improve body awareness and coordination.

My class is an Autistic preschool class with 8 students who range in age from 3-5.

Many of them are non-verbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. There are a number of methods and techniques used in the education of autistic children. We use a variety of methods to teach our Autistic preschoolers and will modify curriculum and materials to fit each student's individual learning style. Many children in my class are visual learners so we use a variety of pictures, charts and visual representations when teaching. We also use a variety of concrete and hands on materials for students who learn well through their tactile senses and explore. The students in my class LOVE music and circle time. During this time, the students work on their imitation and language skills. It can also be a calming time for students with behavioral and attention issues and music can help reach them when other interventions don’t.

My Project

The materials I am requesting include Listen and Read Alongs (which are new stories with flannel pieces to tell the story with), Tabletop Storytelling Board and Storytelling Glove (will help with putting the flannel pieces on) and the CD/Cassette player to play the music. The students will learn listening skills and literacy skills by listening to and participating in story telling using the Listen & Read flannel pieces. These Listen and Read-Alongs will help bring books and songs alive and provide visuals for the Autistic preschoolers. They can watch the story when I use the storytelling gloves or table with the storytelling kits. They also love hearing stories on tape and respond better to them then my voice. The stories on tape also include music and fun voices. They will learn improved social skills, language skills and imitation skills by having new materials for their circle and music time.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom by giving us a reliable and working CD/Cassette player that is made for the classroom and every day use.

The CD players bought at the store don't last and have even ruined some of my CD's due to the amount of usage. Music is beneficial to my student's lives and having activities and materials for this time of their day can help improve many skills Autistic preschoolers need to work on.
