Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My elementary school is located in one of the most poverty impacted areas in Oregon and in a large hub of diverse immigrant populations. 84% of Alder students are children of color, 100% receive free/reduced price lunch, and many are bi-lingual, with 26 languages spoken in their homes.

Here, we strive to be a community of lifelong learners, to honor diversity, and to pursue excellence.

Each member of our community is committed to this vision of excellence. It is evident in the display of student work, the emphasis on our school-wide life-skills program and the strong academic programs.

We are very proud to be the first "Dreamer School" in the Nation. As Dreamers, we are committed to the goal of getting each student through secondary school and onto college. This project will help make our school an equitable place for all students, so that each can reach his or her potential in school and beyond.

My Project

The students at Alder Elementary face challenges that we really can’t even imagine today. Teaching them skills to be mindful is critical for preparing them for the future. Along with the music class that we offer our students I will be weaving in mindfulness practices into the already existing music curriculum. Finding ways to bring mindfulness into the curriculum and teach in a mindful way is very important. For the first few weeks of school, I will be working with the music teacher, Ms. Crafton, in delivering this curriculum.

Our intention is to not only provide a great experience in music class, but to give students a chance to really gain the ability to self -regulate and monitor their own emotions internally, and therefore make more mindful choices for themselves and those around them.

Ms. Crafton will be providing the music component while collaborating with Ms. Nicole on mindfulness and community building. We will be team teaching this class for the first several weeks of school in order to establish positive relationships.

These materials will make a difference in our students learning by providing them with a calm learning environment within the music classroom. The books and glitter calm jars are a way to teach the idea of mindfulness to the students, while adding music and movement through yoga and breathing. Some students will need tools for sensory concerns such as weighted blankets and headphones in order to help them relax and concentrate fully. Our hope is that their school lives will improve greatly and they will be more successful in social relationships, creating more space and energy, and setting a good foundation for students to learn about themselves and each other.
