My Students

Music is one of the most powerful elements in our students' lives, yet they receive zero training or education in its basic concepts. Instead of being passive receivers of what comes over the airwaves, let's create future musicians and conductors.

Our students are very low on the socio-economic scale.

Over 90% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch through the school. We are located in the middle of our downtown area near our state's capitol. Despite their many challenges in life, the students have continually outscored similar schools academically. Our students are overachievers who don't always have the resources it takes to reach even higher.

My Project

We currently have no music program in our school that exposes the children to a wide variety of music influences and instruments. We have a drum class, but it is limited in scope and open to only a handful of students. Each year I am required to teach one unit on music, yet all I am given are texts that discuss music within a story. I want to bring actual instruments and experience to the classroom. I am expected to instruct the students on a variety of music themes, such as rhythm and tone. In addition, I am required to introduce instruments such as violins, flutes, and drums. While I am able to show pictures and play instruments off the Internet, I have no access to real materials to give the students a true music experience.

My students absolutely love music.

They can quote every line of every song they've heard, yet struggle to remember basic facts from stories they have read. How wonderful it would be to bring music into the room to aid in the teaching and learning. Along the way, let's inspire the next generation of musicians and conductors.
