Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Believe in them until they believe in themselves." This quote represents the motto practiced daily by a beloved teacher and coworker who unexpectedly passed away last year. I believe that as teachers who strive to encourage our students when they frequently give up on themselves.

Our school is frequently tagged as gangs mark their territory.

Our students also come from high poverty areas. Many parents work several jobs simply to make ends meet. Our students achieve despite these hardships. We have been an AVID national demonstration school. Along with our feeder high school, we are the only middle and high school AVID demonstration school in Orange County. We have also received the Title I Academic Achievement Award. Our Unified School District was one of the recipients for the Broad Foundation Award. Despite these awards, there is no funding for a music program. Despite their rough backgrounds, my students attend school every day and care about their learning. Music is a way for them to express themselves. Through music, they escape their gang neighborhoods. My classroom is a safe haven where turf wars and criminal activity doesn't exist.

My Project

Students are going to take a difficult piece of music from its raw unpresentable stage and turn it into a top rated performance at our school district festival. They will perform in front of judges and all of the intermediate school bands in our district. Beginning students will develop their tones on brand new instruments that will not work against them making it difficult to learn and progress. The band will trouble shoot and rehearse daily to perfect musical phrasing, complex rhythmic passages, and solidify musical interpretation. After the festival performance, the band will "go on tour" and perform at local elementary schools for students who will then hopefully aspire to become young musicians themselves. I am requesting a Prelude Tenor Saxophone because our current instrument is old and needs constant repair.

Music is multifaceted and makes a difference to each student in their own way.

However, in a school where most students face so much adversity, this project will provide a way for students to be successful, proud, and will give them a sense of accomplishment.
