Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of the students in my classroom come from low income households. They are faced with many challenges every day. Many of their families are working two jobs. They are not fortunate enough to have had experiences that many of us take for granted.

My students are enthusiastic learners.

They enjoy activities that get them out of their seats. Anytime music or movement is connected to their learning, they are engaged. They are not afraid of performing in front of their peers, which is refreshing.

My Project

My students are much more involved in learning, when they are doing something creatively. They have been fortunate to have been introduced to the recorder by our music teacher. This experience really piqued their interest. They all wanted to continue learning more. Having these recorders in the classroom will really allow my students to have more practice with the instruments.

Studies have shown that "actively learning an instrument can help a child's academic achievement" (Melissa Locker, Time Magazine, December 16, 2014).

Studies themselves only prove what I see in the classroom whenever students are engaged in music. They are totally focused and engaged. I play music throughout the day to keep them engaged. Having the recorders will be a nice added tool to incorporate music into the classroom.
