My Students

On March 13, 2020, the walls of B-27 fell silent. No one could have predicted that morning would be the last time that our band would play together in person. As I cleaned out the room last week the eerie silence felt louder than thunder.

Not even quarantine could keep our students from making music.

The 8th-grade band performed virtually at graduation and nearly all of our students continued to practice their instruments at home.

Throughout the quarantine, our greatest struggle continues to be instrument maintenance. My students are highly dependent on school-owned instruments. Since they are learning at home, many do not have access to reeds, valve oil, and other essential supplies. Without these items, future music-making will not be possible.

My Project

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to learn to play an instrument with broken reeds or stuck valves. Throughout remote learning, my band students remained dedicated to their musical learning in spite of major issues with their instruments. From sluggish valves to chipped reeds to crusty trombone slides, my students faced numerous challenges over the past four months.

The arts are where so many of us found comfort during quarantine, yet the arts here in NYC now face insurmountable cuts.

Music has been therapeutic to our students, many of whom have experienced loss and trauma. Without essential supplies including reeds, valve oil, cork grease, and slide oil, it will not be possible for my students to continue making music.
