This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an energetic bunch! They are full of curiosity and keep me on my toes.

They are special because they, like anyone, have the desire to communicate, but may have some difficulty at times.

My students live in a lower socioeconomic area and some of the parents do not speak or read fluent English to know what their rights are to ask for help. Besides their current situation, my students have shown me that they have the potential to be very successful if they have a communication tool to "bridge the gap". My students love to express themselves through music, dancing and art. They love to share what they can do to others, because like everyone, they just want to connect.

My Project

I use music as a way to help my students retain information by making learning fun. At the same time I am exposing them to different instruments that they would not ever have access to. Having a floor Tom Drum will help me teach my students to follow beats and how to follow instruction. We also plan to use them in an upcoming Red, White and Blue performance at the end of the school year. Behaviorally, the musical instruments are also a way I reinforce positive behaviors in my classroom, because they love it. Socially, these instruments will provide opportunities for my special ed students to share a common interest and make meaningful friendships with their other general education peers, all with the help of music.
