My Students

Everybody has a story to tell and everyone wants to be heard. It's with this philosophy that we approach our work in The Lab, a program serving urban youth in special education.

The students with whom we work have the special educational label of EBD (Emotional- behavioral disorder).

Our students attend this small school program because their behaviors prevent them from achieving success in a mainstream classroom setting. Here, they get more behavioral and academic supports by more adults, in a smaller classroom setting. 85% of students in our EBD programs receive free and reduced lunch; the majority (80%) are male and youth of color, primarily African American. These youth are affected by a variety of social and mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiance disorder, anxiety and/or depression. For many of our students their behavioral and mental health struggles are linked to challenging circumstances of living in a culture of racism and the realities of living in poverty.

My Project

William Duncan, our guest instructor, is an experienced musician and youth worker. He is African American, committed to being a role model and inspiration for all youth, particularly for the youth of color in our program. He teaches piano and voice at Walker West Music Academy, a 23-year old institution in the historic African American community of Saint Paul. At the Lab there is a waiting list of students eager to explore their musical potential. When given the chance, students have recorded original songs and performed on stage. Through drum and guitar lessons, music has proven a powerful tool at this school, helping students to channel their energy, to calm themselves in a moment of anger, and to express their stories. Music instruction also helps students practice patience and gain confidence. In this project, my students will connect with a valuable community resource, Walker West Academy, and work with an African American male professional.

This project will provide access to music instruction to a group of students who typically do not get this opportunity.

They will have his support in the classroom and gain performance skills. This project will keep students motivated and inspired at school. With your help, we can continue to support these students to gain the courage to speak about their lives, gain healthy coping strategies, and find success at school!
