My Students

My name is Jennifer Frerichs and I teach choral/ general music to students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. My students are great kids; capable of extraordinary things. They are rhythmic, imaginative, and talented. Unfortunately, they also come from an at-risk, high trauma environment. You see, I teach in the inner-city of Richmond, Virginia. Many of my students struggle with things that I would never have dreamed possible when I was their age: from taking care of younger siblings to worrying about where the next meal is coming from.

Through it all, my students remain resilient and ready to learn.

School becomes a place where they feel comforted--their "safe haven". We laugh, we hug, we counsel, and we learn; all in hopes that our children will leave with the skills necessary to be a productive member of society.

My Project

These Amazon Fire 8's will truly bring my music class into the 21st Century. These devices will allow my students to experience the creativity of music in a whole new way. It is often said that music makes you smarter, and over time, science has proven this fact. Music is unique because of the way it forces us to use our brain; it is the only discipline where so many parts of the brain are engaged all at once. It is always my goal to ensure that my students are fluent in the universal language of music. With apps like "Music Sheet workout", "Piano app for Kindle", and "Piano Games Mini", students will be able to vastly improve their music fluency in a fun and creative way!
