My Students

I teach popular music to a diverse group of humorous, energetic, and musical young people. A typical day might involve watching a video of Jimi Hendrix perform, clapping out rhythms, singing, and breaking into small groups to work on songwriting and performance.

My school offers a very rigorous academic course of study, so music education provides an important element of play and creativity to counterbalance the more sober side of the curriculum.

I want all of my students to be able to play a little drum set, strum some basic chords, and know something about the piano as well. I would also like them to be able to sight sing basic melodies. Not surprisingly, my students love to perform and are curious about all music from Bach to Beyoncé and everything in between.

My Project

I am requesting a copy of the classic textbook "Music for Sight Singing", edited by Robert Ottman, a collection of a few hundred short songs and melodies. With my assistance, students will use the book to learn how to sing some basic songs either singing words or solfège (do, re, mi, etc.). With luck, they will progress from simple melodies to singing canons and more complex polyphonic music. Students will get a sense for common four part voicing (soprano, alto, tenor bass) and begin to understand where their voice fits best in this compositional schema.

Acquiring this textbook will make a difference, because, while there is a wealth of written music available on the Internet; this book remains a classic in terms of its selection and the way the music is organized.

Unfortunately, it's an expensive book, so it would be nice to get some assistance in procuring it for my students.
