Music is a universal language. For my 4th and 5th graders with autism, music is one of the most enjoyable times of our day and has the potential to open their minds to other subjects. Our small special education school in Brooklyn does not have a music program, but I use my own musical background to bring music into our classroom for at least 10-15 minutes every day.

I recently finished the second day of a three day training called "Music for All" that focuses on teaching music to students with severe disabilities. While my class has had fun singing, dancing, and playing music games (such as Hot Potato and Musical Chairs) for the last several years, the workshop has given me many good ideas for more engaging music activities for students with autism. Using my new knowledge, I am confident that I will be able to further my students' musical and social skills with a variety of new activities. In order to do this, we need a few new music items.

We are in desperate need of some new CDs. Finding age-appropriate music can be a challenge but I am confident that the movement CDs I have found in a school supply catalog (featuring songs like Peppermint Twist and Blue Suede Shoes) will be fun and appropriate for my students. I would also like a book titled 101 Music Games for Children to get out of our Hot Potato rut. There has to be more games out there than the few we have played for the last several years! In order to encourage my students to let their voices be heard, we would also benefit from a classroom karaoke system. Most of my students have trouble with verbal communication. But even one of my students who is completely nonverbal makes audible noises when he uses a toy plastic microphone so I can only imagine the results of using a karaoke machine! Having a karaoke machine that shows song lyrics will also help increase their literacy skills while they boogie down. Finally, I am confident that with the help of color-coded visual cues, my students may learn to read music that they can play on color-coded resonator bells.

Please consider helping my students experience music on a deeper and more engaging level. I am enthused about all the new activities I have in mind and can't wait to try them with my students. Thank you for your consideration.
