My Students

There is a bumper sticker with music notes on it that says: "If you can read this, thank a music teacher." I want to share my love of music with my students and give them the opportunity to become excellent music readers.

I teach beginning band, beginning strings and orchestra to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in a large urban school district where most of my students are second language learners and part of the free lunch program.

These students would never be able to afford to rent instruments and pay for lessons, so our district provides the instruments for our students. There's nothing like seeing the excitement on their faces the first day they get to take a musical instrument home.

My Project

Instrumental music books are an invaluable tool to teach my students how to play their instrument and how to read music. These books also expose my students to songs from many different cultures and countries. My students will be able to take the books home to practice and since they include a practice CD, it makes practicing at home more fun.

Since most of my students come from low income families, many of them cannot afford to purchase music books.

And with budgets being what they are, music and the other arts are usually low priority when it comes to funding. This project will provide quality music books for my students, give them the chance to become proficient music readers and help me to instill the love of music in them.
