Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a music teacher and I try to get my students out of their standardized test brain into their creative brain. We explore different aspects of music and play a variety of instruments in my classroom. We are primarily Orff-focused, which means we play barred instruments, such as xylophones. This year we will be learning to play the song, "Sweet Child O Mine." This Contrabass Xylophone is the only thing we need to make that performance happen! The large Contrabass bars will be useful in our special needs classes as well. This way students can focus on mallet technique instead of aiming at specific bars. The large Contrabass bars make it almost impossible to miss a specific note. This will ensure students have the opportunity to focus on rhythm and steady beat, since the keys are so large they cannot miss them! I try to make the learning process easier for my students because they are often under a lot of pressure. Even in elementary school, we have seen an increasing demand for mental health services.

“Music can lift us out of depression or move us to tears – it is a remedy, a tonic, orange juice for the ear"; But for many patients, music is even more – it can provide access, even when no medication can, to movement, to speech, to life; For some, music is not a luxury, but a necessity.

I want to provide my students with the most awesome music classroom. One where they can walk in and forget about their problems and enjoy how lovely it is to be in an American public school that has the support of donors like you! We don't have any Contrabass bars and have never had any in our school's history. Help us change that!
