I am a teacher at a title 1 school located in the heart of the Eastern Mountains of North Carolina. We have recently started "Music Awareness Month" at our school and the children have shown a true interest in exploring instruments from around the world that they have seen in books and on webquests we have used. I do not have the instruments to show them how they truly work and sound. I would love for them to have the chance to explore the pitches and timbres that come from instruments of different sizes from around the world. It would be enlightening for the children to have this experience. After they have the chance to explore, I would like to have the opportunity to share other world artforms with them and allow them to create some of their own. We would like to have a melody harp, a gathering drum, a set of global players, a set of Lummi sticks, a Ukulele, a set of world craft books,and a Glockenspeil to explore the children's interests. The students will enjoy exploring the physics of sound, timbre and pitch of various instruments as they explore the multicultural world of sound where they can compare and contrast the likenesses and differences of children's experiences around the world.
