My Students

I teach first grade at a Title I school where sixty-one percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. My students come from a wide range of households speaking many different languages and having varying levels of access to learning opportunities outside of school.

What binds my students together is their sense of a class family.

They know that when they enter their classroom, they can count on each other for help, advice, and encouragement. Most of our activities are based on cooperative learning and teamwork.

My Project

When my students apply their artistic flair to just about any content area, their learning is unleashed, and they enjoy themselves immensely from beginning to end. Author studies on books by Jan Brett, Kevin Henkes, and Eric Carle provide opportunities for Art and Literature to intermingle. We study these authors' entire creative process: from the seed of an idea for a story through character development, accompanied by their thought processes for creating magnificent illustrations. Students take great joy in collaborating on large-scale murals based on these authors' stories.

Class sets of Crayola paints, markers, and pastels together with books for author studies will enable my students to make story murals to cover our classroom walls.

Students elaborate their comprehension of the stories by retelling them through their murals to themselves and whoever is lucky enough to enter our classroom!

To continue their appreciation of these authors, my students read and discuss these works in cozy circles furnished with soft cushions and comfy seats. With their murals hanging in full view above them, my class feels a part of our authors' creative processes.
