Help Mr. Hill

I'm the visual arts teacher at a Title I elementary school in Washington, DC. I currently teach visual arts to over 400 students in grades ranging from Head Start (three-year-olds) to 6th grade (twelve-year-olds). We are one of only a few schools that achieved passing scores on last year state assessment test. With recent budget cuts disturbing all of the school; supplies and more specifically art supplies are greatly affected by these budget shortfalls. But “the show must go on” and the students should not be the ones who have to suffer. So as a teacher I pride myself in funding most of the art program during the year on my own and being creative in finding ways to eliminate these shortfalls; but my own financials are making those opportunities far and few in between. I have been teaching in the same school for the past ten years and I have seen tremendous change. Our community is growing every day with a new mental health facility, apartments and homes currently under construction. But, what has remained a constant is the students and their need to learn. And, their need to be prepared to be productive citizens in society. My students recently saw some amazing murals as we were studying mural artists at the turn of the century. The art of Diego Rivera was paramount in our studies. His work of social realism really piqued their interest. His work in social realism gave the students the idea to advocate for things that they would like to see changed both in the school and outside the school in their own communities. They hope that the murals they create will spark change in positive directions. We have the wall space and the ideas; what we don’t have is the paint to bring the ideas and concept to life. The gallon sized acrylic paints will be used as the corner stone of the murals. Under the guidance of the art teacher the students will be able to create thematic murals. The students have identified several different wall spaces for the murals throughout the building to have different themes: (1) near the library to promote literacy and provide more books for the library (2) near the cafeteria to promote healthy living and have better lunches (3) near the physical education room to promote physical fitness and health lifestyles. These are just some of the student lead initiatives. There are always so many powers to be that talk about education reform. But how often are the students' voices heard in the various reform models? This opportunity will give the students a voice that will be heard; not only from the “pretty” pictures on the wall but from the message behind the painting. They say pictures speak a thousand words; these murals have the potential to speak volumes.
