My Project

Students are held accountable to reach the learning standards in NYC. My job is to engage students and make the learning fun! I use multiple mediums to accomplish this! Students use a variety of materials to help them make sense of the new concepts they are learning. Offering different mediums, such as different kinds of painting experiences, allows students to use multiple parts of the brain, multiple learning styles, and multiple modalities. We use wipe-off board paper walls for drawing, writing, and problem-solving anywhere in the classroom. This allows for flexible seating and flexible grouping. Putting magnetic dots on numbers, letters, words, and picture manipulatives allows students to move these items around the room and create a learning "environment" wherever they go. Dot painting is a tool we use to increase children's hand and finger strength, as well as give them opportunities to highlight letters, numbers, and words on a practice page. Dot paints allow students to monitor their own hand grasps as they apply more or less pressure on the bottle, releasing more or less paint. We love velcro, not only for sensory interactions, but velcro dots allow students to move and return manipulatives from anchor charts, easels, and bulletin boards. Lastly, students must learn the proper way to wash their hands. An automatic, wall-mounted soap dispenser will help our students to learn this skill without struggling with a pump or bar of soap!

My goal is to provide my students with as many different mediums possible to help them explore, problem solve and interact with the concepts they will learn in kindergarten.

When a student can engage and explore the kindergarten concepts and standards through different mediums, they use multiple senses, multiple learning styles, and multiple modalities to make sense of their learning.
