Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Multilingual Students is a lunchtime organization at a Title I public school in Houston, Texas. Members come from diverse backgrounds and follow varied interests, including specific languages and courses of study. We have a Spanish Group and a French Group, including home speakers and students beginning to speak, read and write.

Students pursue specific goals, including strengthening connections with heritage languages (French, Spanish, Maya K'iche, Garifuna).

The larger goal is to promote multilingualism and to have students take ownership of their learning!

We use a modern linguistics approach towards language learning to compare differences between languages syntax (grammar/word order) and phonotactics (e.g. how languages adapt words to their sound systems). One nascent project involves publishing trilingual books created by native speakers of vulnerable languages, including Maya K'iche and Garifuna.

According to US News and World Report : The total minority enrollment is 98%, and 92% of students are economically disadvantaged. Westbury High School is 1 of 49 high schools in the Houston Independent School District. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Westbury High School is 54%.
