My goal in creating Multicultural TV is two-fold; not only will it give student's an opportunity to use the latest technology, it will also give voice to some of the marginalized cultures at our middle school. As an educator, who cares deeply about promoting equality amongst minority lines, this project has the potential to shape the individual lives of students as well as work towards creating an environment where the voices and concerns of the students are heard. Ultimately, each week, a group of students will create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) that will be shown to the entire school after morning announcements. In a test run of this project last year, we had great success. Using borrowed equipment students created PSA's that dealt with many multicultural issues. For example, we recorded PSA's that dealt with Women in the Workforce, Minorities in Science, and People with Disabilities. Each group not only wrote the PSA, but also directed, recorded, edited and produced them. The overall response from the students was one of engagement and excitement. By allowing the students to pick the topic, and produce the entire PSA, not only do they learn more about creative writing and technology, they also become sympathetic towards the groups they are representing. Help me create a multicultural environment where we give voice to silenced cultures through the use of technology.
