My Students

We are a large elementary school in Northern California. We have a very diverse population in our school. I have students whose families come from all over the world. In my class alone, we speak six different languages. What wonderful diversity! Being a transitional kindergarten class we do a lot of hands-on exploration and have a lot of firsts - first time to write our names, first time to count, first time to use scissors, first time to have any type of schooling.

My Project

In the wake of the recent George Floyd tragedy, I would like to provide my students with more toys which represent as many cultural backgrounds as possible.

In TK, play-based learning plays a crucial role in a student's education and development.

When children have access to toys from different cultures, natural learning opportunities occur, whereby children can become familiar with, and learn to accept, other cultures at a very young age.

As I cleaned out my classroom at the end of the school year, I noted that most of the dolls, which have been donated to my classroom, are of Caucasian descent. Due to these generous donations from families over the years, I have generally not needed to purchase toys for my classroom. However, at this pivotal point in our nation's history, I would like to provide children access to more toys which better represent different cultures.

Though I have always taught my class with multicultural awareness and acceptance, I would like for that to be reflected in my play area as well. Therefore, I am requesting purchases of multicultural dolls, dolls with disabilities, and multicultural food to begin. Would you be able to assist me in achieving my goal?
