Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I began teaching ESL at the beginning of this year, I would have never imagined that I would be doing so via distance learning. I said goodbye to my second graders in mid-March and have not seen them in person since then due to COVID-19.

Although we are coming close to the end of the year, we still have more than three weeks to hone in improving our English speaking skills.

Due to COVID-19, I have been unable to enter my classroom. The lack of resources has made distance learning all the more difficult. However, my students have been resilient- participating in any way that they can via google classroom, class dojo zoom, Epic Books, Raz-Kids, iReady, and Prodigy. We have been doing read alouds weekly. I have been amazed by my students' and their families' engagement during these unprecedented times.

My Project

Teaching children about different races and cultures is essential for them to become well-rounded learners. As an EL teacher, my students come from various different backgrounds, and fostering these backgrounds in the classroom is imperative to their success.

These multicultural books will help teach my students about other races and cultures- I want my students to see themselves in the books I read.

I plan to use these books as read alouds. From there, students can make connections to their own lives and the lives of their classmates. I want to create a classroom dynamic where my students feel comfortable about who they are.
