My Project

Being from a low-income and high-violence area in South Arkansas, it is not often that my students get a chance to relax and enjoy reading. My students are so eager to come to our class cafe-style reading and writing area, grab a snack, and sit in a quiet comfy space to read. Some of their favorite books include fantasy worlds, where they can escape their reality. However, none of the current books they have are cultural representations of the people they see every day. The books that we have chosen provide a storyline that they enjoy with a character that resembles them. The markers, pencils, and writing materials will be a great asset to helping my students create stories with the characters that they desire to see.

Being able to read about someone who looks like you, can spark students' imagination and aspire them to reach new heights.

As their teacher, my goal is to provide them with the educational tools they need to be creative in a culturally diverse world.
