Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low socioeconomic school in Southern California where all students receive free lunch. My students are special because they are in a bilingual kindergarten class. Seventy percent of our day is in Spanish and 30% of our day is in English. I have 24 students with different needs, personalities, and learning modalities. Most of my students are English language learners, but I do have English speakers who want to learn how to read and write in two languages. How awesome is that?

My Project

I teach kindergarten and one thing that they noticed right away and they point it out, is the difference in skin color. I want them to love themselves the way they are and what better way than by representing themselves in their drawings and be able to match their skin color with the multicultural crayons and markers. Currently, they either leave themselves uncolored, use brown, or try to make light skin color with an orange, but they don't see themselves represented in the final project. I want them to feel represented, just like they see themselves in author's books and illustrations.
