Help me give my students the opportunity to learn how alike, yet different we all are through the hands-on use of these multicultural itemslike art materials in a variety of skin tones, multicultural babies, puppets, and puzzles.

My Project

Cultural and racial sensitivity and awareness are an important part of the early childhood experience. Children should come to school knowing they will be taken care of and respected. Differences are welcome, and in fact, celebrated.

I want my classroom to include items and materials that tell the children "you belong here" and set the tone for a welcoming environment where they feel safe and loved.

The materials I am asking funding for are simple, yet hands-on ways that I can incorporate cultural awareness in my classroom. They support questions and conversations around how we are alike, yet different, in a non-threatening way. Having conversations while holding a baby in the dramatic play area, finding paint that matches their skin tone when crating self-portraits in the art area, discussing items of clothing while putting a floor puzzle together with peers. All of these are opportunities to bring cultural awareness and sensitivity into the classroom in a genuine, thoughtful way.
