My Students

We love a good book because it speaks to us somehow. Either we see something of ourselves in it, or we get to experience something new in our minds. All students deserve to have access to books that they can relate to and books that teach them something new and diverse.

My students crave a personal connection to reading that is so essential to building their interest.

The ESL students at my school are a diverse bunch, with no one group or heritage dominating, making for really rich conversations about culture, language, and history. They love seeing their culture reflected in literature or media, but also relish learning something new and exciting. Books play a crucial role not only in developing their literacy and language skills, but in navigating the cultural minefield of middle/high school. Our particular school is small, and lacks the resources to really take advantage of the cultural and linguistic opportunities that other schools may take for granted. Finding literature in our library that is multicultural or multilingual is nearly impossible, and as a result many students are not represented in the literature available, and all students are denied access to a truly diverse and engaging selection of books.

My Project

The books I am requesting would serve to immediately transform the literature available at our school. All students should be able to find books that they connect to, and that requires books at all levels, in many languages, depicting many cultures. There are so many students that are left out of traditional literature in schools, and that harms all students by denying the entire community an accurate depiction of who they are as a whole. I chose books with simple, beautiful text and far reaching themes so that they are accessible and meaningful to all students. The text can lay the foundation of basic literacy skills while the themes provide material for in depth critical thinking, essay writing, debate, and conversation. This would hopefully be the beginning of a larger collection dedicated to language and culture. Our materials have to be smarter and more adaptable, designed to reach all students rather than just the dominant group.

Providing students with high quality, accessible, visually enhanced, multicultural literature should be a hallmark of public education.

My students will be blown away by the richness, relevance, and depth of these books, and will surely find some lifelong favorites among them. Please help us rediscover culturally meaningful literature in our school!
