My Students

I will be teaching a class of multicultural fifth graders who are a mixture of ELD, special needs, and gifted students. They are eager students who are ready to learn and try their best.

More than half of our students come from low-income families who cannot provide them with the resources they need to help give their children the best education possible.

These students are the ones on the free or reduced-price lunch list.

My Project

Year after year, I find myself using the anthologies provided by our school district to teach our ELA program. Although there are great components in the curriculum, it lacks in exploration of literature. I mean, how can you teach and understand literature if you are only reading 4-5 pages of a chapter book? It simply doesn't make sense!

We love reading core literature as a class!

Using core literature in literature circles, or as whole group instruction, deepens the understanding while reading, helps kids find evidence in the text and draw conclusions, and engages students in accountable talk.

Children often do not have a good opportunity to have literature discussions to help support understanding, so this is why I feel passionate about literature in the classroom.

I would love to incorporate more books that talk about the diverse cultures we have in our classroom. I believe the book "Esperanza Rising" has many lessons to learn from. It shows the importance of love and sacrifice for family and friends but also focuses on culture and struggles of poor families. It's a book that hits straight to the heart and teaches empathy.
