Multicultural Book Club: Promoting a Love of Reading for ELLs

My students need 6 Amazon Kindles for an ESL book club. Each student will have a copy of the book we are currently reading loaded on their Kindle to participate in all aspects of this club.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our English Language Learners are superstars who have traveled to our small community school from all over the world. They represent Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Yemen, Albania, Pakistan, and Mexico. Some of our students live in a temporary family shelter with extended family or in public housing. They bring their diverse backgrounds into my ESL classroom where they learn a new language and culture while embracing and maintaining their home cultures.

They have been working incredibly hard to reach fluency in English.

Despite this, they need additional support to allow them to feel confident using academic English in the classroom. Improving their English language skills will help them to prosper in all other academic subject areas and allow them to thrive as young scholars.

My Project

These Kindles will allow my English Language Learners to participate fully in our first ever multicultural book club. I want to motivate my students to not just read but more importantly develop a love and appreciate for literature. Along with reading their books on their Kindle they will be able to use various student friendly reading apps that will access the four modalities I strive to cover throughout all my sessions with them - reading, speaking, listening, and writing. This will be accomplished via Reader's Theatre, Discussion Circles, and book reviews/retellings.

These Kindles will allow our book club to promote both reading and technology.

I am really excited about this book club because students will be exposed to high interest books that promote cultural awareness, tolerance, and have characters they can identify with. Some of the books I have scheduled for the upcoming year include but are not limited to the following:

My Name is Maria Isabel

Esperanza Rising

My Name is Sangoel

The Name Jar

I'm New Here

A Refugee's Journey from Syria (Leaving my Homeland)

I Hate English

Who is Malala Yousafzai

Sadly my classroom is not technology friendly. Unlike most classrooms, we do not have a SmartBoard. I do my best with a small MacBook and one outdated tablet. These Kindles will drastically help move my language learners closer to closing the achievement gap.
