Multicultural Biographies

My Students

The students coming my way in the new year are full of energy and have made themselves known in our building since they started kindergarten. There are a wide range of ability levels, as well as motivation in the classroom.

Many of these kiddos struggle with reading, both in fluency and comprehension.

They need help building a love of reading and increasing their stamina, which will help improve the other problem areas.

My Project

One of the goals in our fourth grade classes is to write informative texts. My teaching team and I are using grade level biographies as primary sources for our students' reports. That collection of books is a combination of one teacher's personal classroom library and our school library. I would like to increase the number of historical figures available to my students, as well as opening them up to more women and people of color.

My school district is rural and mostly white, so I feel it's important to give my students an opportunity to learn more about people who don't look like them.

I've requested two dozen biographies, mostly of prominent individuals from the African American, Asian, and female communities with the hopes of broadening horizons and exposing my students to stories they may not encounter otherwise.
