My Students

My students are an energetic and excited bunch of kindergarten to second graders. Our classroom is involved in the Autism Initiative Verbal Behavior Program. All of my students are diagnosed with autism, and they have a range of needs that are addressed through small group and one-to-one teaching sessions.

My students thrive when they have access to learning tools that allow them to use their hands, and the flexible seating options make our classroom more comfortable and student-centered.

My students are working to improve not just their academic skills, but communication and social skills, so that they can interact with their world in the fullest way possible.

My Project

This project includes a variety of different items that will allow my students to approach their learning with hands-on items. The floor cushions will allow us to take a break from the typical desk and chair setting. The students will be able to use them to sit on the floor during morning meeting, along with other times during the school day.

Many of my students come to me with fine motor skill deficits, which means they struggle to use pencils the way a "traditional" classroom normally does.

These puzzles and other learning items allow my students to practice their letters and numbers while also working on strengthening the muscles in their hands.

Our current trampoline is very old and is dry-rotting. It is a useful tool in allowing students to regulate their sensory system with the input they receive from bouncing. This can help them get back into the classroom and ready to focus.
