Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a high-school band director. I teach music to grades 9-12. My music program is unlike many in that I believe that all students should have the opportunity to experience music, not just the students that can afford expensive band instruments. Our school is unique in that it is a socioeconomically challenged area with high diversity of cultures. Through our guitar program we have been able to bridge some of those economic and cultural barriers that may have prevented students from participating in music education.

I wish that I could hook you with how horrible these students' lives are but the simple fact is that many of my students show greater joy with what they have than many students from wealthy communities I have taught in. My students never complain of broken equipment, they joke about what they have, dig around for spare parts and make things work. In spite of this ability it is becoming imperative that we get a hold of some more guitars. We are starting to limit the class because of available guitars and I believe that having access to more guitars will allow us to create more musical opportunities for more students.

By providing more guitars I am able to show that music is one of the areas in life that does not discriminate based on cultural background or wealth. Music is for everyone and is soundtrack of our cultural history. Currently in music education we tend to emphasize the importance of Western classical music. While I love this genre it is equally important that our students know that the blues, Norteno, jazz and country music are equally important. By using the guitar it is possible to show the connections in music instead of suggesting that music only belongs to the wealthy that can afford expensive instruments.

It would be simple to tell you how can make a difference but instead I will emphasize how you have already made a difference. Last year I watched as students blossomed in my class. Students that thought music was for the "other" kids. Many of these students had no background in music, by the end of the year they were flocking to my room with songs they had written and were learning. I believe my greatest joy was when my principal approached me and said, "we need to do something about students playing their guitars in the hallway, they're doing it all the time!" I hope to have this discussion with even more guitars this year and hope that you can help.
