Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is a Title I school in the heart of North Philadelphia. Most of my kids are living under the poverty line. My students don't have access to their own copies of books and these books would be a game-changer for them. My goal is to bring my kids equity and give them the opportunity to enhance their imaginations and improve their writing skills.

When each student has their own copy it creates a feeling of ownership over their own learning.

Our school motto is ROAR and ownership is one of our focuses in our school.

Our goal in our school is to create lifelong readers who enjoy chapter books and getting lost in a story.

My goal this year is to expose my students to the book version of movies that they love. Most of my students do not realize that Harry Potter started out as books. I plan on doing a year long literacy study on Harry Potter. My students will begin the year by reading book 1 as a study with me. They will also be split into houses and have the ability to earn house points. I plan on using house stickers as a motivation tool not only for behaviors in the classroom but in all areas of being a good student. I have also listed wands and glasses to encourage participation. Having the students put on their reading glasses and their pointer wands. By midyear I hope to be able to start book 2 with the kids taking ownership of their learning and forming literacy circles, where the kids are in charge of their own learning of the literature.
