Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th grade ELA, 6th grade literacy enrichment, and 7th grade creative writing to 100 students in a Title I school. Many of my students come from extreme poverty. Many struggle daily to find a hot meal. My middle schoolers, in many cases, are left to raise themselves and take care of their younger siblings. Despite these hardships, my students always come to school ready to learn.

My students are motivated to rise above the hardships they endure so they can have a rich education and a bright future.

My Project

This project will impact my students immensely by motivating them to read. In my school, we have independent reading three periods a week. During independent reading, students choose a book at or around their Lexile level. Towards the end of the period, they answer a prompt focusing on the specific standard the students need the most help with. My students enjoy independent reading because they become immersed in a book that they CHOOSE, so why not give them the opportunity to sit in a comfortable space while they read that book.

By giving students the option to sit somewhere comfortable, other than their desks, while they do their work, I believe it will increase performance, comprehension, motivation, and stamina.
