My Students

For many children math is scary. They often lack confidence or have difficulty moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. My goal is to create a safe, nurturing environment where math is fun, relevant, and applicable to every day life. Having greater access to more tools and games will help!

3rd graders are curious, precocious, and full of energy!

I currently teach math & science to 44 students every day. We live in rural Maine, where many of our students have free or reduced meal plans. Although many would be considered middle class, there is a big discrepancy between what that means in Maine and what that means in other parts of the U.S. Our school has a team teaching model, allowing teachers to focus on content where they have the greatest expertise, resulting in deeper and more engaging lessons. Promoting math, critical thinking, and problem solving skills are priorities for our school and our district. We have a very active parent and volunteer base, but our resources are few. We have access to technology, but it can be limited - like when we have to share 20 Ipads among 150 third grade students! We are progressive, staying on the cutting edge of standards based education, and are willing to try new and innovative things in the classroom. We are a close knit family!

My Project

My students will use these materials in a variety of settings. For example, I am asking for an art center - a designated space in my classroom where students can color, paint, cut, & glue at their leisure during free time, indoor recess (which happens a LOT in Maine!) or when their work is completed. Allowing and encouraging a creative component in our classrooms is key to child development and carries over into their writing. I am also requesting a variety of math games, counters, and other hands-on manipulatives that will help children understand concrete math concepts and other big ideas like the water cycle, problem solving strategies, and the connection between percents, decimals, and fractions. Finally, I am requesting supplies that will allow my students to learn in a nurturing and safe environment. I am asking for privacy folders so that students can work in a quiet space with minimal distraction, as well as tools that will help with the organization of their work.

These donations will help make learning fun and relevant by helping my students make connections to the world around them.

They will also give me the resources I need to make my lessons even more engaging and applicable to real life situations. Children are curious and are eager to learn. We just have to provide them with the tools that will help them succeed. My goal is to inspire them to ask "Why?" and "How?" and become lifelong learners.
