Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The items in this project would go towards helping build supplies and tools that would immensely improve the Craft and Home Skills Club that I facilitate for my students. I am focusing on teaching them how to recycle materials to make use of "trash" and turn it into something new that can be cherished. They are able to learn skills like how to sew, how to crochet, how to build bird houses, and how to look for items that can be recycled or upcycled.

I love to teach students how to create things on their own and how to visualize reusing materials to prevent it from going to a landfill.

My students are eager to learn, but I am seeing a lack of essential tools like storage, an elevated stool so they can see me as I show them how to complete certain tasks, and a podium that can be used to elevate the project we are working on.

My students come from a variety of background that make up our Title 1 school in Phoenix, Arizona. Most of my students have never had the opportunity to thread a needle, let alone actually sew anything and this is a life skill that they will be able to use should they need to fix a button or a hole in their favorite shirt.

Our school is very close to multiple Animal Shelters in Phoenix so my end of the year goal would be for my students to be able to make blankets, toys, and leashes to be able to donate and give back to our community.
