This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a Resource Specialist Teacher, I work with Special Education students both in General Education classrooms and in small groups within the Learning Center. My middle school students are eager to learn and always do their best to absorb the materials they are taught in every subject. As I support them across all subjects, I see their lower reading ability as one of the most significant barriers to accessing an equal education. Without a peer to support them with reading prompts, my kiddos often feel stuck and cannot complete their assignments. Having access to reliable headphones will allow my kiddos to be able to listen to the text-to-speech versions of their online textbooks in both ELA and STEM subjects, which will not only support them in accessing the curriculum more independently but will also support them in their own literacy journeys.

Literacy is one of the greatest tools a student can have.

With many students unable to access their classwork and homework because they cannot read the questions, it would be amazing to offer them some accessible support, such as headphones, that would allow them to have the independence and confidence that every student deserves. Headphones will allow my students to focus on comprehending their work, rather than decoding language that is above their fluency level.

I want to offer my kiddos a full, reliable set of headphones to use both in small groups and in class so they can build independence. Additionally, the pouches and label maker will keep these headphones safe as they will be precious items on campus! Each one will need to be labeled and stored in its own pouch for safekeeping so they can help students and build literacy for years to come.
