My Students

To starve the creative mind is a tragedy! To feed the creative mind is an achievement! Remember Kindergarten when you got to play? Well, I have limited materials. My students need more blocks, please!

My 25 Kindergartners are from varying income levels, from the lowest socio-economic status to middle class status.

We even serve a small homeless population. My students are ethnically diversified and most are bilingual and speak a different language at home. There are about 25-40% English Language Learners in my class and 25-40% are on free or reduced lunch. The students are highly intelligent, sometimes rambunctious, excited about learning, and cooperative. I have a few students who have problems learning or catching on quickly and I try to work with them extensively. The blocks will especially help this underprivileged group- some of whom cannot hold a pencil. The parents are very involved at my school. They help out tremendously with their time and effort, but cannot afford bills and a hefty wish list from a teacher, nor do I expect them to. The school is high achieving and prides itself on reaching goals. I am a new teacher to a new grade level and expectations are high.

My Project

My students need sets of blocks for center time: wooden blocks, thistle blocks, and attribute blocks to help them engage in learning and to continue to develop their minds. I believe that every child has the ability to achieve great things. The building blocks of this achievement are little things that matter- structured play time, monitoring cooperation and sharing, building on prior knowledge, creativity. The "blocks" that I have ordered will help achieve these things I mentioned and build upon them. They will allow for creative building, help to tell stories, create new worlds, help create dramatic play, and contribute many more positive ways in a Kindergarten class. Structured play time in the afternoon is given to kindergartners and they can make choices to where they want to go. When they go to the block area, they will be able to leave their blocks up for the whole week, building upon the scenery that they have created. It is very important to offer this to the children because it encourages imaginative story telling, verbal language development, and provides for amazing dramatic play which will all contribute to their writing skills.

Well, I'm the new kid in town, the teacher that just got hired at a new school and I got all of the leftovers.

Hand-me downs, rusty chairs, and mismatched tables. I am environmentally conscious, so it is okay, but I need more materials-blocks! I am starved in a world with no materials. We need blocks and I just cannot afford to spend another dime on my classroom. Having these blocks will make such an impact on my students, it will inspire creativity, teach cooperation, and give them knowledge. Thank you!
