My Project

GWJMS students are highly resilient. Often our students have gone through multiple moves from school to school. Many of our students have hidden sensory needs that are rooted in early developmental stressors or exposure to ongoing community traumas.

We plan to use noise-cancelling headphones to ease the impact of excess un-organized noise in large classrooms.

Some students need a break from this intense sensory input. Five minutes of muted sound or quiet can help students re-regulate and go back to engaged learning, help them de-escalate from conflicts, or give them a space to practice mindfulness skills. Play mats can give students a clear, well-boundaried space to manage physical impulsivity; and vibrating pillows can provide soothing input that calms the nervous system so that students can go back to instruction, ready to learn.
