My Students

I work in a k-12 school as an Occupational Therapist. I mainly work with elementary students who need help engaging in school tasks. Some challenges my students face include trouble with handwriting, visual perceptual skills, visual-motor skills, sensory-motor skills, gross/fine motor coordination, and completing school-based activities of daily living. My goal as an OT is to make them as independent as possible so they can succeed in their academics.

Many of my students suffer from anxiety and sensory processing issues which make it difficult for them to focus throughout the day.

I'm looking to incorporate a sensory space in my school for students to come and decompress during troubling times.

My Project

Many of my students have anxiety or sensory processing issues which makes it hard for them to focus and become an active participant in the class. I'm looking to design a space in my school for students to calm themselves in order to participate in class with their peers. I have included many products which will "feed" their sensory systems. These materials will provide visual, tactile, and proprioceptive feedback to help regulate their bodies for learning. Hopefully, by incorporating these items my students will improve attention, posture, visual system, body awareness, aversions to touch, as well as give them a sense of calming (especially during a big exam)!
