My students need assorted snacks to have at school, or to bring home at night, or on long weekends because they are heavily reliant on the meals provided by school!

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Coming from some of the lower socioeconomic areas in Brooklyn, the 9th and 10th graders within my Special Education classroom have lives that most of us could not even comprehend. Everyday, roughly 36 students enter my English and Mathematics classrooms, eager to learn, but also distracted by hunger, which often limits their academic growth on a daily basis.
Each student in my classroom is classified as emotionally disturbed and has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Many of these students come from unstable home lives and some have been incarcerated. The last thing on the mind of a teenage student should be, "How am I going to get my next meal?"
Everyday on a regular basis, my students come in hungry, without any means for getting breakfast. When they do not have access to snacks, they grow angry, and sometimes even embarrassed and often lash out. With these snacks, my students will be able to focus on their classwork for the period, rather than become frustrated waiting for lunch to be served. With these snacks, education will be able to happen!
My Project
One of the safest places for my students to be, is our school and my classroom. On the streets, they are judged by their friends and society for being labeled as an individual with an emotional disturbance. My young adults need individuals who will always be there for them, and provide them with the steps necessary to overcome the hand that they have been dealt. No student should be so angry because he/she is hungry that they cannot complete their work. No student should have to worry about where they are getting their next meal from. Together, we can show our students that they do not have to worry about food, they just have to worry about bettering themselves.
