This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello! Welcome to Ms. A's speech room! I am a speech and language pathologist at a public elementary school in East Harlem, NY. As an urban school in a high poverty area, many of our students come from inopportune backgrounds. Many of these young children are in the foster care system, live in homeless shelters and a majority of our students are eligible for free or subsidized lunch.

My particular students are the ones who struggle the most.

All of my students receive special education services and all need specific help with vocabulary, reading, writing, conversing, story-telling, etc. My students range in age from four years to twelve amazing, creative, kind and funny students around! They teach me new and exciting things as regularly as I teach them their letters, grammar and writing skills.

My Project

We are in desperate need of working, up-to-date computers in my school. Laptops provide easy accessibility and the chance for me to work with my students not only within the speech room but also within their classrooms. My students need a MacBook Air and protective case to provide up to date technology access! If given the gift of this technology, my students will be able to learn valuable research skills, typing skills and will be able to use a variety of programs to better increase their reading, writing and communication skills.

Through professional trainings I have received this year, I have learned many useful and life-changing ways I can use technology to better teach my students.

I hope to be able to apply what I have learned from these trainings toward teaching my students but I am only able to do this with the right technology at hand. Using an apple laptop I am able to create readable books for my low-literacy students that are age-appropriate, use a brainstorming program to help my students better organize their thoughts, use the speech-to-text feature to help my students who struggle with fine motor skills write paragraphs and essays and many other essential tasks that will help my students succeed academically. With your help, this, and so much more, will be possible.
