This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember sitting down at a desk, decorated only with a standardized test & a #2 pencil? Do you remember the way you felt? I never want my students to face those tools with anything but a sense of confidence in their knowledge and abilities. These books can help prepare them for success!

I have more than 70 inquisitive and motivated ESL students in grades 3-5.

Their success in school and the community is something that I support in every way. The looks on their faces when they have set and met a goal drive me to continue forward with the work. I work in a high needs school with over 99% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch in a time when so often students living in poverty are overlooked. Because of this, often they are sadly not provided with the equal education they deserve. With ESL students, the situation is often made worse as a language barrier can hide their true learning potential! If they struggle with the language, how can they effectively communicate what they know? My students are eager to learn and enter my room every day with a sense of hope and leave with a sense of pride it what they have accomplished. They love to learn and I LOVE to teach them.

My Project

If donated, these books will be used one at a time as a primary text for an extended unit of study. They will be supplemented with related secondary texts, in order to provide my students with the appropriate tools to evaluate multiple texts across a broad range of subject matter and form. We will explore a range of topics, choosing the most appropriate books and portions of texts to teach a specific skill, from comprehension to grammar. To better facilitate the learning of these children, a fellow ESL teacher and I have teamed up to co-teach the tested grades. Since this is a new and exciting venture for us both, the book "Collaboration and Co-Teaching:Strategies for English Language Learners" will offer a wide range of suggestions to support our mission.

A classroom set of books, providing access to grade level, rigorous texts, would make a world of difference in my students' reading growth, & my ability to effectively teach them.

A full classroom set of common core books could give me the meat of an entire year of Language Arts teaching. It would completely change my classroom. Having their very own set of classroom books would also give my ESL students the much needed impression that they have MUCH to contribute to our classroom & the world!
