My Students

Our school has eighty English language learners in grades kindergarten through fifth, representing many diverse backgrounds. We have native Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Russsian, Albanian, Gujarati, Arabic, Polish, Belarusian, and Nepalese speakers. These students' English Proficiency levels range from newcomers including many recent immigrants, to those with a good grasp of Basic Interpersonal communication skills who are working towards cognitive academic language proficiency. My students are engaged each day in listening, speaking, reading and writing activities to achieve English language proficiency while also working towards grade level standards.

My Project

These vocabulary building materials will be instrumental in increasing my students' social and academic vocabulary. They will be able to listen to exemplars of proper pronunciation of new words. The "listen to me phones" will allow them to self monitor and adjust. The phones will improve student focus and attention because they are intentionally listening to their own voice. Both the physical presence of the phone and the sound funneling attributes will help the students pay attention and listen carefully to what they are saying when they speak and read. The phones improve the students focus on their own task and are less apt to be distracted by what their neighbor is saying/reading. Additionally the amplification allows every experience to be customized for all personality types building confidence to the shyer and vocal students alike.
