Will you help my students become the strong, confident leaders of tomorrow? I teach first grade in an urban school. Over 85% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many come from single parents, who didn't complete school themselves.

Many of my first graders begin the year with very weak language and reading skills. They haven't been read to at home, and they don't have books of their own to practice reading at home. They're eager to learn, but struggle every day to make sense of the print around them. In an effort to improve their fluency, we read two poems every week. The children practice them on their own every day during our literacy center time. We work on expression, and "making your voice sound like you're talking." This helps them to better understand what they read. After watching a "poetry slam," I realized that my students needed to perform their poems. So, every Friday afternoon, we have Mrs. P's Poetry Slam in our classroom. We turn on a special "spotlight," and every student has the chance to read a poem from their notebook. Now, their faces light up at the chance to read for their classmates and they're more motivated to practice. Now, we're ready to take the next step. I'd like to videotape my students reading at our Poetry Slams. When they see themselves, they will be able to see ways to improve, and their abilities and confidence in themselves will grow. However, my school doesn't have a video camera.

I would like to purchase a small digital camcorder. It would allow me to record up to 60 minutes of poetry and easily play it back on our small TV. My students will be able to see themselves reading, and more importantly, see themselves as readers.
