My students need fire tablets with cases to get online in class since we can only get into the computer lab once a month. Students can draw and prove math problems to display in class.

My Students

I receive an e-mail about a global math competition that is online, but I am quickly disheartened to learn that we can only go to the computer lab 3 out of the 14 competition days. This time it could be different with these fire tablets for groups.

At home, some of my students do not have access to the Internet or to a computer.

Watching them peck like hens at the keyboards in high school shows how little experience some have with technology. But every opportunity I have to incorporate using computers to learn sparks a fire in my students. They love the instant feedback that I cannot provide to all 28 students at once. They love the fact that they are rewarded instantly for their efforts and taught when they are incorrect. I love it because my students are engaged. Our school has three computer labs and two carts. They are typically tied up by the English department for students to write research papers. I would not want to keep students from being able to type a final essay. So by helping us get these 8 fire tablets and cases, we will have the opportunity to get instant feedback more often.

My Project

A word problem is posted on the board. Each group graphs the line on their group tablet and when the timer buzzes the groups send their graphs to the board from the fire tablets with cases. We discuss what is right and wrong with each submission. Sometimes asking students to defend their answers. Especially when there is a divide in the class on the solution. Students are now having a conversation not only about math, but they are learning to prove their reasoning. On a different day, you may see students working in groups. This time each tablet has something different presented to the students. This time they are given different tasks to present at the end of class. Each task leads to a final conclusion. The exit ticket will be a summary of what they learned in class from the activity.

We all love instant feedback.

This is why we are glued to our social media when we post a photo or why we love playing games like Candy Crush. We love to see success. Shouldn't this be the same in the classroom? I want to use the tablets to engage 21st century learners, while giving instant feedback. Students would receive grades automatically and be more prepared for tests knowing their mistakes and have the chance to correct their errors prior to final exams.
